How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business in South Yorkshire?

If you run a small business in Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham or Doncaster, you've probably asked an agency what SEO costs and got "it depends" back. That answer is fair, but it isn't much use when you're trying to set a budget.

Bigfoot Agency

So this guide does it the other way round. These are our own published prices, what each plan covers and how to work out whether the spend makes sense for you. We're not going to guess at what other agencies charge. If you want the wider UK picture, our guide to how much SEO agencies charge covers that.

Our prices, in plain numbers

We publish three plans. All prices are per month and exclude VAT.

PlanPriceBest for
Growth£500 + VAT a monthLocal businesses building baseline search visibility
Scale£1,000 + VAT a monthBusinesses in more competitive markets that want faster growth
Market DominanceBespokeLarger businesses, multi-location campaigns or a move to national

With VAT at the standard 20% rate, Growth works out at £600 a month and Scale at £1,200 a month. If you're VAT registered you'll usually reclaim that part.

Over a year, that's £6,000 plus VAT for Growth and £12,000 plus VAT for Scale. Worth knowing before you start, because SEO is a slow build. More on that below.

What you get on each plan

Growth (£500 + VAT a month) is built for a local business that wants to show up properly in its own area. It covers local SEO, including the AI search side, a properly set up and managed Google Business Profile, a foundational content plan and monthly reporting.

For most South Yorkshire trades, shops, salons, clinics and service firms competing in one or two towns, this is where to start.

Scale (£1,000 + VAT a month) is for businesses in busier markets, or those covering a wider area. It adds more work on getting recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews, link building from reputable sites, deeper content hubs around your services and trend analysis so you're writing about what people will search for next.

This tends to suit businesses competing across Sheffield, or across several towns at once, where a handful of well-funded competitors already rank.

Market Dominance (bespoke) is for multi-location businesses or anyone moving from local to national. It includes a full analysis of your search market share, programmatic SEO for large numbers of location or product pages and direct access to Mark, our founder, who has 30+ years of search experience. We price it after looking at your market.

Every plan includes senior account oversight.

No long contract

All our plans run on rolling monthly agreements. There's no 12-month lock-in. The standard notice period is 60 days, so you know exactly what leaving looks like before you sign up.

We'd rather earn the work every month. If SEO isn't paying its way for you, you should be able to stop.

Why the price changes between businesses

Two businesses in the same town can need very different levels of work. The main things that push the cost up or down are:

How competitive your searches are

A dog groomer in Penistone has fewer rivals than a solicitor in Sheffield city centre.

How many places you serve

One town is a smaller job than the whole of South Yorkshire.

The state of your website

A slow site with broken pages needs fixing before new content will do much.

How much content you need

If you have one page covering ten services, those services need their own pages.

Your Google Business Profile

Some businesses don't have one at all. That's often the fastest win.

This is why we look at your site before recommending a plan. Guessing helps nobody.

How to tell if it's worth it

SEO is worth paying for when the extra enquiries it brings in are worth more than it costs. That sounds obvious, but a lot of businesses never do the sum.

Try this. Work out roughly what a new customer is worth to you over a year. Then work out how many extra customers a month you'd need to cover the fee. For some businesses that's one job. For others it's twenty. If the number looks realistic for your market, SEO is probably worth a proper look.

A real example from our own work: a catering client of ours grew their search visibility by 313% year on year and went from around four enquiries a week to several a day. You can read how in the catering SEO case study. Results like that aren't guaranteed and they take time, but it shows what the work can do when the foundations are right.

For a fuller look at the maths, our article on whether SEO is worth it for a small business goes into more detail.

What SEO won't do for the money

It's fair to be clear about the limits too.

  • It won't work in weeks. SEO builds over months. If you need calls next Tuesday, paid ads are a better short-term fix.
  • Nobody can guarantee position one. Google says itself there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. Any agency promising a fixed position is guessing.
  • It can't fix a weak offer. If your prices, reviews or service don't stand up, more visibility just shows more people that.

Where to start in South Yorkshire

If you're in or around Barnsley, our Barnsley SEO page explains how we approach local search across the borough, from the town centre out to Penistone, Hoyland and the Dearne Valley. We're based at the Digital Media Centre on County Way, so it's our patch.

If you're further south, the Sheffield SEO page covers how we handle a bigger, busier city.
