Twitter’s New Timeline and How to Break Through the Noise

Twitter has announced an update to its timeline, which could make it harder for you to make sure your target market sees your tweets. But, with some strategic planning you can break through the noise on the social media network and get your message across.

“The Best Tweets”

The new feature is optional, and it’s one that users will have to turn on with a setting called “show me the best tweets first” in their account settings. Once turned on, the timeline will display tweets the user is most likely to be interested in at the top. Then, the timeline underneath will appear as usual, in reverse chronological order.

Twitter’s blog post explains that this format will allow users to see tweets they may have otherwise missed. It also states: “We’ve already seen that people who use this new feature tend to retweet and tweet more, creating more live commentary and conversations, which is great for everyone.”

Breaking Through the Noise

With so much going on, an always-changing timeline and constant tweets from the hundreds of accounts your target market follows, making sure people see your tweets can be challenging. But, there are some things you can do to stand out on Twitter, making it a more effective marketing tool.

Generate Interaction

Twitter has stated that its algorithm considers what accounts and tweets users interact with, their interests and “what’s going on in their network” to determine what appears in the “best tweets” section. Asking for retweets, feedback and favourites can help you generate interaction and make it more likely your tweets will appear at the top of the timeline.

Keep it Short

Twitter’s 140-character limit already forces you to keep things short, but by keeping your tweets even shorter and simpler you can stand out. Crowded tweets with too many hashtags or links or that don’t leave room for an added comment in a retweet get skimmed over by users.

Include Photos and Videos

Photos and videos stand out on the Twitter timeline, so using them can draw attention to your tweets. Use them strategically to capture attention and show off your products or services. You can also use them to give users a behind-the-scenes look or to add personality to your account.

Use Twitter Cards

Twitter cards visually stand out and bring a new level of interaction to your tweets. You can use various cards to include the headline and a snippet and image from a blog post, include a link to download an app or to play audio or video from the tweet.

Use Strategic Hashtags

By using popular hashtags or creating a branded hashtag that gains traction, you can reach a larger audience and encourage follower interaction. Do some research to find hashtags that are commonly used by your target market and are relevant to your business. Also consider doing giveaways to get people using your branded hashtag.

While this update may change the way some people see your tweets, it won’t have a major impact on your marketing strategy if you continually work to make sure your tweets stand out and capture your target market’s attention.
