Introducing Google’s Webmaster Academy

Starting a website can be overwhelming at the best of times, but with the web community all in a flutter over the most recent Google algorithm updates, now is possibly the worst time for first-timers to jump on board. You may know that search engines are important, but it can be difficult to find a definitive answer about how to go about making a good impression without resorting to black hat techniques.

Fear not, as Google is working hard to ensure everyone is on equal footing and has access to top notch information. For those new to Google’s Webmaster Tools, the sheer number of options available can be enough to send you running for the hills. The problem is often in the terminology; you probably know exactly what you need to do in layman’s terms, but when phrases like “crawl report” and “site index” are thrown into the mix you’re utterly stumped.

Google’s Webmaster Academy

The Webmaster Academy is a great tool for first-time webmasters wanting to learn the ropes, or even for more experienced SEO practitioners who wish to refresh their skills.

It’s split into three sections including:


Google & You

This section covers everything from how Google works, to how to get your site listed. This is a great foundation for ensuring the content you create and publish is Google friendly.

Webmaster Tools

In this section Google covers the basic principles of search engine optimisation; how to hook your site up with Google Webmaster Tools, and how to ensure your website is crawled.


If you’re based in the US and don’t currently have a business website then good news – you can get one for free, including a custom design and URL, lucky! This section also covers how to get your business listed as a local place, and how to use social media to boost your reach.
