Could Foursquare become king of the Check-In?

For those of you unfamiliar with Foursquare and other location based apps such as Path, the late Gowalla, and Buzzd, the concept is very simple. These apps use GPS technology to locate app users when they use their smartphones. Woah, that was a creepy sentence! The appeal of these location based service apps is that users can ‘check-in’ to locations, and post their check-ins to social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook. This also allows users to see which of their friends are nearby, and to earn awards, prizes and offers for checking in to certain locations.

Here’s an example of a Foursquare tweet from footballer Alvaro Arbeloa.

Foursquare is one of the leaders and pioneers of the location based social media movement, and the company has just taken steps to further secure its place at the top. Foursquare now supports connected apps, that is, apps within the app, which will further enhance the Fourquare experience for users.

Foursquare has partnered up with several companies to provide apps that will go that extra mile for their users. This includes a weather channel app that will give you a full weather report when you arrive in a new city (handy when travelling) and Eat This Not That from Men’s Health Magazine, which will let  diners know about the healthiest items on the menu when they check in to a restaurant.

The app will also support Instagram integration, which is good news for those who like to geo-tag their photos, and good news for any business with snap-happy customers. The full list of integrated apps can be found here and will be updated with new apps in the near future. This could mark a shift in the way users explore cross-platform and cross-network social media.
